Shri Vethathiri Maharishi was born on August 14th, 1911 in the village of Guduvancheri, located in the outskirts of Chennai, Tamil Nadu into an indigent weaver’s family.

Right from childhood he had an intense quest to know about God, cause of poverty etc. His spiritual quest took him to many Gurus. He started practicing meditation at a young age and as a result at the age of 35 he attained self realisation.

Vethathiri Maharishi taught spirituality to people as taught by the Siddhas in a very scientific way so that even a non-believer of God can understand the essence of religion and spirituality in a very convincing way. He is considered as the modern Siddha or the 19th Siddha by many.

Maharishi strongly believed that meditation and introspection are the two greatest tools that can bring transformation and peace in the individual. “World Peace through Individual Peace”, was the sole mission of his life. Maharishi synthesised the concept of spirituality suitable for everyone, mainly for the householders. For this reason he was called the ‘common man’s philosopher’.

It is to be noted that Maharishi had a vision of Ramalinga Adigalar (Vallalar) another great saint, and Vallalar apparently merged with Vethathiri Maharishi in his subtle form for 12 years, during which Maharishi penned many poems that people find it difficult to understand even today. They were actually Vallalar’s work which were given as a gift to Vethathiri Maharishi due to which Maharishi’s lifespan also increased.

Vethathiri Maharishi attained samadhi on March 28th, 2006 leaving a huge spiritual legacy and teachings for the world to understand and follow.
