Agasthya Maharishi is one of the direct disciples of Lord Shiva. A Maharishi from erstwhile Tibet, he is revered as the first and foremost among the Siddhas. The Lalitha Sahasranama, was first revealed to the world when Hayagriva, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, taught the same to Agasthya Maharishi. He composed Aditya Hrudayam, a hymn on Lord Suryanarayana which was taught to Lord Rama just before his battle against Ravana. He is also attributed to have laid the foundation for the basic grammar work of Tamil language, through his book Agathiyam.

The contributions of Agasthya Maharishi are vast and diverse. He is regarded as a pioneer in yogic sciences and has contributed richly to the field of medicine and astrology especially nadi shastra. He is an expert in alchemy. Agasthya Samhita is a dialogue between Lord Muruga and Agasthya Maharishi. He has appeared in many Puranas and Itihasas. One of his medicinal preparations, Boopathi Kuligai, is so powerful that it can even bring the dead back to life. It is said that he was instrumental in the birth of River Cauvery, drank the entire ocean to capture the asuras.

Agasthya Maharishi has been regarded as one of the foremost exponents of Kalaripayattu, a martial art form which is even today practiced in many parts of present day Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Maharishi’s contributions towards the southern part of India have been phenomenal. Agasthya Maharishi anchored a lot of energies in the Arunachala mountain and made it very powerful as Lord Shiva’s abode.

As per the Puranas, at the marriage ceremony of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the Lord asked Agasthya Maharishi to go to the South. Though he has mastered all the 64 siddhis, he walked all the way from North to South and performed many miracles. On the way, it is written, he subdued the mighty Vindhya Mountains which were growing very tall in competition with Himalayas out of jealousy, by entering into a pact that the mountains would not grow till he crossed back to the North, which the mountains bowed and accepted till date. Agasthya Maharishi also grew to the level of the Vindhya Mountains, chopped off the upper part with his powerful energies and brought it to South India and kept it in Tiruvannamalai.
