Ekadashi Fasting
Human body receives energy from food, water and prana from the cosmos. Due to our ignorance that food and water are the only source of energy, we fail to accommodate the subtler spiritual energies from the cosmos.
Observing fasting during special days helps us to receive these pure energies. Also it is a fact that spiritual practices like pranayama and meditation are highly effective when the stomach is empty.
Ekadashi is the eleventh day after the full moon and the new moon, and that way two Ekadashis fall every month. Ekadashi day is considered to be the most auspicious day and also the most suitable day to fast.

Purpose
For detoxification of the body, purification of mind and strengthening of the Koshas.
Procedure
Anyone between the ages of eight and eighty years can fast. Pulses, grains, non-vegetarian and contaminated food have to be avoided. Raw fruits and vegetables can be taken. Gradually, one can reach a state of complete fasting, which means not even taking water. Based on one’s will power, one may try fasting without causing much strain to the self. However, there is a caution that sick people and pregnant women should avoid fasting.
Guidelines
It would also be beneficial if one observes a vow of silence along with fasting.
During fasting, one can also practice the ‘AUM Meditation’. This also helps to maintain the energy level of the body and mind. This also helps to stay connected with the divine throughout the day.
